BELLY BINDING CONTRACT

Belly Binding is a sacred practice with roots in cultures across the globe. In the postpartum period, it is done by wrapping the hips, belly and abdomen tightly with fabric. This physical binding helps heal the physical and emotional body in the immediate and long-term postpartum period. It does so by:

  • allowing the internal organs to settle into their pre-pregnancy states

  • assisting in toning the abdominal wall and preventing diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal wall)

  • Relieving back pain

  • Realigning and supporting strong posture

  • Lessening duration of lochia (postpartum bleeding) by encouraging the body to expel blood naturally

  • Preventing the “empty” feeling after birth and providing safety and comfort

As a non-clinical support person, I (Qiddist Ashé) make no medical claims for the outcomes of my belly binding services. I cannot guarantee results.

Belly binding is most effective when the wrap is worn for 8-12 hours daily for approximately 40 days and accompanied by gentle, postpartum-appropriate exercises. Belly binding can still be done after 6 weeks, and in the event of a cesarean after 6 weeks with clearance from your medical provider. Belly binding in the early postpartum period is most effective when the client remains in bed the majority of her time wearing it. The binding is intended to be worn as the client rests and heals in bed.

While there are many traditions of belly binding across the globe and the Malaysian tradition popularized in the west tends to focus on tight binding from very early (day 3-5) of the postpartum time, my belly binding philosophy aligns more with the traditions common to Latin America as well as the African diaspora that uses looser binds earlier in the postpartum, and progressively tighter binds as healing takes place. Essential oils or a warming paste may be used, but are not meant to treat or cure any medical conditions. Warming paste includes any combination of the following: black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, clove, olive oil, and calendula. Only therapeutic grade essential oils will be used, if desired.

By signing this contract, you (the client) take full responsibility for your health and medical care. Please notify me of any unusual pain, circumstances of the recent labor/birth, applicable medical concerns, and/or allergies experienced.

I will not attempt to diagnose any symptoms discussed, but will direct the client to the appropriate medical care provider as needed.

The client understands that belly binding is not recommended with the following conditions: severe pelvic organ prolapse (bladder, uterine, etc.), emergency hysterectomy, severe diastasis recti (abdominal separation), and abdominal hernia.

I am not a licensed massage therapist and do not claim to practice as one. My sole purpose is to provide for the physical comfort and emotional support of the postpartum mother. Knowledge imparted during the course of the belly binding service is based on my experience as a doula, postpartum belly binder and herbalist. This advice should not be taken as medical advice, and any action taken/results had based on my suggestions is the client's responsibility and liability.

All services include 1custom belly bind and in-person tutorial, and 1 follow up by phone or in person. I will come to your home to tie your first bind, as well as show you and/or a support person how to bind. I will follow up in a couple weeks to make sure you feel supported in your healing process. The fee is $100. If this is outside your price range, please see me for more options-- I want to work with you to make this healing practice accessible.

**Note: your belly binding is typically worn 8-12 hours in the first six weeks with a looser bind, and can be continued with a tighter bind post 6 weeks, or beginning after 6 weeks in the case of a cesarean.

**For best results, take a warm shower before binding and applying paste, if using. Be sure to drink water and/or herbal tea frequently while wearing the bind.

This contract is drawn up and agreed upon by the following person as designated by their signature above.
