PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION CONTRACT

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the birther’s placenta after the birth of the baby by dehydrating, powdering and placing it into capsules for the birther to use as seen fit. Some benefits may include:

  • Increased milk production

  • Creating a consistent flow of oxytocin (the bonding and love hormone)

  • Helping with mood and prevention of postpartum depression

  • Replenishing iron levels

  • Balancing out postpartum hormones until your body can regulate them on its own

  • Warming the body, preventing a stagnation of energy

This sacred medicine that your body creates has been revered for its power, spirit and rich nutrients in cultures across the globe. It is my honor to provide your encapsulated placenta to you to support your physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing after birth.

Limitations and Disclaimer:

I am not a licensed medical professional and I am not able to diagnose, treat, or prescribe for any health condition. No specific benefits or effects are promised. Any benefits will vary from person to person. Some of the ascribed benefits of placenta consumption are supported by research; however these benefits have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA. It is your responsibility to determine whether using placenta preparations may be of benefit to you.

Client Responsibility:

After your birth, I will take your placenta with me. It is your responsibility to discuss release of your placenta from the hospital where you give birth (or backup hospital for home births), though if I am also your birth doula, I will be present to help you ensure that the team understands.

It is important to note that there may be circumstances under which your placenta cannot be used. Significant abnormalities of the placenta may necessitate your doctor or midwife sending your placenta to pathology for further examination. In this case, it is best to request that a piece of the placenta is sent to pathology rather than the whole placenta, as chemicals are often used on the placenta in the testing process. Other conditions, such as signs of infection in the mother during labor, may mean that consuming your placenta will not be beneficial to you. If in doubt, I will consult with you before proceeding. In the majority of cases, it should be possible to claim your placenta after a cesarean. Please let me know if you have any health conditions which may affect the health of your placenta or the health and safety of anyone who may come in contact with your placenta. If you taking any medications regularly, other than prenatal vitamins, please let me know as well.

Service Description

To process the placenta, the placenta is drained of blood, sliced thinly, then dehydrated and ground for encapsulation. I will pick up your placenta at an agreed upon time and have your pills completed within 48—72 hours. I will prepare your placenta for transport by placing it in a couple of large, freezer strength Ziploc bags, then into a cooler with ice packs. Most hospitals will provide a container or bag. I will contact you once your pills are completed to arrange a time for drop off. If birthing outside the home, please remember to indicate on your birth plan that you intend to keep your placenta!

In all cases, please remember that I am also a birth doula. In the event that I am called to a birth or have another client’s placenta preceding yours, there may be a delay of 24 hours or more in preparing your placenta. I will contact you if this is the case. I will provide a written explanation of the proper storing and handling of the finished placenta capsules and guidelines for daily usage.

Fees: $250 ($125 for current birth doula clients)

A $50 non-refundable deposit will be invoiced to you after signing the contract, and the remaining balance is due when you receive your encapsulated placenta. Please inquire about scholarships and/or payment plans.
