Weekly Tarot: Power & Clarity

King of Swords, African Tarot by Marina Romito

Listen to DJ Ashe’s playlist for the King of Swords on Spotify

Edited: In the previous version there was a photo of what we thought was a honest depiction of the Black Panther Party in Atlanta was fraud. Stay alert.

In the African Tarot the King of Swords is standing in front of a throne, holding a sword in a protective posture across their chest, draped in fiery orange, their bare feet rooted to the earth. The suit of swords in the Tarot represent the air, the powers of the mind to sever uncertainty and fight for truth courageously.

The King of Swords is timely card, because it is a symbol of mature power and clarity. What is more clear than the visible presence of the Black Panther Party? What is a more mature exercise of power than the dismantling of the police? This card is a reminder that we have the tools we need, emotionally, intellectually, materially and that we are clothed in our passion for truth, abolition, and justice. There is no reason to doubt the power of this moment because our struggle is righteous and our feet are supported by the divinity of Mother Earth.

For the next seven days I invite you to console the earth daily, walk barefoot in the grass, talk to the plants, and greet the trees. Ground yourself because the journey towards liberation is long, but remember you are prepared. You hold the tools for battle in your hand and now is the time to take responsibility for the materialization of your visions, hopes and dreams. This is an invitation to channel your wisdom into action in the name of our collective liberation.

Abolish the Police.

Tarot has been an important part of our personal spiritual journey, serving as a Divine channel for our intuition. Olivia has used Tarot as a tool in her pastoral care practice and now feels called to share it more broadly with our Beloved community. Olivia reads the Tarot as an invitation for you to deepen your understanding of the journey you are on. By drawing on the images and stories of the tarot, her goal is to illuminate the power of your own intuition. As a queer womanist her readings center liberation. Olivia will pull one card as offering to the collective every seven days and it will be accompanied by a playlist of seven songs that bring the invitation of the reading to us through music.
