5 of Discs, Motherpeace Tarot by Karen Vogel

In Motherpeace Tarot, the Five of Discs correlates to what other decks name pentacles. Pentacles are tools of the earth, and they represent the physical plane and the body. Here, the image depicts a women with a look of deep concentration. Above her head floats five colorfully patterned discs, representing the worry and frustration she has been holding. She counters this stress by returning to a simple and ancestral task: kneeling on the earth and kneading dough. Her connection with the earth, the activity of her hands, and her alignment with her ancestors allows her to release the trauma that she has been holding in her body.

The Five of Discs is an invitation to return to simple tasks and practices that ground us to the earth and return us to our ancestors as a way to calm our nervous system. This invitation is timely, as we are in the belly of an uprising for Black lives. Our bodies and spirits have been on the frontlines and as a result our nervous systems are working over time: to keep us vigilant at a protest, to keep us warm in a cold precinct, to keep us alter as we consume the news and as we respond to calls for support.  As a result, our bodies and spirits are being taxed.

It is imperative that we create space for simple practices that ground us to the earth and connect us with the power of our ancestors as a way to calm our nervous system. Our ancestors have given us tools for the liberation of bodies and the health of our spirits in the form of food, music, dance, mediation, plant medicine and more. Thus, I invite you to heed this invitation to find release in whatever ways are available to you. If you can breathe into  this grace of release, maybe your shoulders soften away from your ears, your tongue may leave the roof of your mouth, or your womb may go from contraction to expansion. Our survival and continued ability to engage the struggle for our liberation depends on us finding ways to release the trauma we are holding in our bodies. Rest, dear ones. Rest.

Have you eaten or drank water today?

Have you mediated or moved today?

Have you listened to music?

Have you slept or napped?

May this reading bring us insights in our journey towards liberation.

Tarot has been an important part of our personal spiritual journey, serving as a Divine channel for our intuition. Olivia has used Tarot as a tool in her pastoral care practice and now feels called to share it more broadly with our Beloved community. Olivia reads the Tarot as an invitation for you to deepen your understanding of the journey you are on. By drawing on the images and stories of the tarot, her goal is to illuminate the power of your own intuition. As a queer womanist her readings center liberation. Olivia will pull one card as offering to the collective every seven days and it will be accompanied by a playlist of seven songs that bring the invitation of the reading to us through music. Listen to this week’s Spotify playlist here.
