Why I'm Not Waiting On The Government to "Legalize" Abortion

Recently, I read a tweet that said, “When the penalty for aborting after r a p e is  more severe than the penalty for r a p e, that’s when you know it’s a war on women”  from @agirlhasnopresident.

And it has me thinking about the recent abortion ban in Texas, the political movements around it, and why I’m not that interested in the legislative battle for abortion rights.

I deeply believe that abortion is not a right that can be “given” to us by the government.

It is a reality and innate truth  that women have always had sovereign ways to be in charge of their fertility and reproduction.

Even enslaved Black women knew how to work with plant allies (like cotton root bark) to induce menstruation when they knew they were fertile and had been r a p e d.

This has always been our truth.

My (perhaps unpopular) opinion on the Texas Abortion Ban is primarily this:

If this is a war on the female body, which I believe it is, why would we turn to the aggressors to ask for permission or a solution? 🧐

We will not get free through legislative action (alone).

We must cultivate our skills, resourcing, and community to co-create the worlds we want to see.

And what I want to see is for you to know and trust that you have the power to:

✨understand your fertile window

✨confidently avoid conception

✨support the early release of a suspected pregnancy

✨access radical care outside the medical model

…with or without the government’s support and approval.

The time to cultivate our skills is now.

While I understand the phrase “making abortion illegal makes abortion less safe,” what I hear implicitly is:

“We don’t trust women to govern their own bodies without ‘daddy’s’ help (the government).”

Fertility management outside the medical model is NOT inherently less safe.

It is your sovereign and ancestral birthright.

This goes beyond a course or a book (although those are great!!) — this is about being in sacred community and lifelong practice of owning our autonomy and acting in it.

We can take of the chains. We can free our wombs.

This is why I started The Womb Room, and it feels more clear than ever.

If you’re ready to cultivate your skills, sisterhood, and sovereignty, I’d love to welcome you.

Wherever you are, may you know that your womb cannot be legislated.

I love you.
